How to Eat Food
I'd like to talk very plainly about food. There are a lot of ideas floating around about which foods are healthy, which are not, and what 'food' even is. I sat down over a year and repeatedly interviewed my personal nutritionist, and with her blessing, I wrote a book that tells you, in plain language, what to eat and why.
This site is a collection of articles about nutrtition, all brought to you from the non-government-approved side of the nutritional fence -- the side that doesn't believe cholesterol is a good measure of heart disease, that sugar kills, and that depression is a symptom of malnutrition. On the left side, you'll find a folder labeled "Articles about Nutrition". That's exactly what you'll find inside -- more are added weekly. That's the important part, but there's a few things you'll need to understand in order to really get the articles therein.
Foods are drugs
I'm not saying that foods should be controlled substances. But knowing what I do about how the body processes food -- the actual chemical and biological effects of eating specific types of food -- I can say with certainty that foods affect your mood, your capacities, your health, and your quality of life just a surely as drugs do.Eat too many of some foods, and your body has to spend more vitamins and minerals to process them than it gets from eating them. Eat not enough of some foods, and your body doesn't get what it needs to repair and rebuild itself -- much less grow.
It is a cultural phenomenon, this lack of concern about what we put in our mouths as long as it fills our gnawing bellies. Other cultures around the world know very well how food can affect their bodies. For example, in feudal Japan, tired housewives deliberately fed their husbands tofu, knowing that it decreased their sex drive and made them unable to perform. Today, we know that soy protein contains estrogen -- 100 grams is equivalent to eating a birth control pill -- but because soy is a cheap, vegan source of protein, we give it to everyone, from infants (who have sexual-development problems because of it) to athletes.
Knowledge is Power
A year and a half ago, my wife was infertile, and had health problems. Asthma, sleeping disorders, allergies, pre-menstrual syndrome, constant fatigue, and plaguing head and backaches. My nutritionist sat down with her and we radically changed what we ate based on her suggestions.Today, my wife is due to have our first baby literally any day now. All of the health problems she had have vanished so completely that our doctor has trouble believing that the only thing we changed was our diet - we don't even exercise any more than we used to. My wife no longer takes any medication of any form, sleeps like a baby, and wakes up perky and ready to face the day. Did I mention she's lost 60 pounds (and that's after gaining all of the baby weight)?
